How many belt buckles will you earn?

The Off-Road Assault On Mt. Mitchell is a 60 mile MTB race with 9,000+ feet of climbing.  From Old Fort you climb up to the Blue Ridge Parkway and just below Mt. Mitchell on beautiful Forest Service roads and unbelievable North Carolina singletrack.  Mt. Mitchell peaks at 6,684 feet and is the highest mountain east of the Mississippi River.  ORAMM starts and finishes in the town of Old Fort, North Carolina and sits at around 1,400 feet.  Most of the climbing is on Forest Service roads while most of the singletrack points downhill.  ORAMM is one of the best marathon distance MTB courses in the US!

THIS RACE IS LIMITED BY THE US FOREST SERVICE TO 450 PARTICIPANTS.

Do not underestimate the extreme difficulty and danger of this MTB race.  The course is extremely demanding and travels over rugged terrain with extreme elevation changes.  The forest remains in its natural habitat.  It is not uncommon to see wildlife such as a wildcat or a black bear.  Be ready to cope with any circumstances!  Aid stations will help with safety matters, but it is the competitor's ultimate responsibility to insure his or her own safety.

A few course related facts: the 60 mile course record was set in 2019 by pro rider Jeremiah Bishop, who finished in 4 hours 17 minutes (we have since made changes to the course and need to record a new course record for 2024 and beyond).  One MTB rider completed the course with only one month of riding under his belt, however, this rider quit riding altogether after the race!  Others too have retired their MTB efforts after competing in this race.  This is not your typical MTB race.  Regardless of how you finish, you will have competed in the most exciting mountain bike race in the entire Southeast!!

6/16/2026 Update

As of the above date, we have verbal approval from our forest liaison to race the below route in 2026.  We're very sorry about the multiple route options leading to this point.  We were trying to be as open as possible with our racers and still give you the best route possible.  Which is why the below route is actually different from what our first two ideas were.

2027 should go back to our usual pre-hurricane route with Curtis Creek, Blue Ridge Parkway and Heartbreak Ridge Trail.  We know a lot of you are excited for that and we are as well.

We have added in some water only stations based on racers feedback from last year's event.  You will have a lot of opportunities to refill water the last 25-25 miles of the course.  We also added in one more aid station to go along with the water stops.  You will have 8 locations on the course to get water from in 2026.

Fun Facts

  • Registration will be in the field of the museum building.

  • Porta Johns will be in the top right parking area on the above map.

  • Parking could be tight so please carpool when possible.

Spectator Information

  • We encourage your friends and family members to cheer you on during the race.  However, there is limited parking around our aid station locations.  There are plenty of other opportunities along the course that family/friends could cheer you on.  Just please respect private property and not upset our local friends on the race route.

  • Aid Station #1

    • Is in the Old Fort Picnic Area (shown on course map above).  Parking will be limited so DO NOT double park or block the entrance into the picnic area.  Also, the homeowner diagonal to the Old Fort Picnic Area DOES NOT like people parking on their property so please respect their wishes.

  • Aid Stations #2 & #3

    • Are the same location on Jarrett Creek Road at the Oak Hollow Trail and Forager Trail trailheads.  This is not accessible by a vehicle.  It would be a short bike ride or longer walk up Jarrett Creek Road from the G5 Parking Area that opened back up in June 2026.  The best bet is for spectators to park at the G5 Parking Area and cheer you on as you come off of Foundation Trail when making your left turn onto Jarrett Creek Road to climb back up the mountain.

  • Aid Station #4

    • Is way up the mountain at Jerdon Mountain Connector.  This is not accessible by vehicle and it would be a long bike ride up to it.

  • Aid Station #5

    • Is off of Mill Creek Road at Bernard Mountain Road.  There is limited parking here and we need to keep Mill Creek Road clear so please only park on one side of the road to not block traffic or the race route.
